To all appearances, Gretchen Wilson went overnight from talented obscurity to phenomenon. Her meteoric rise, the kind experienced by only a handful of artists in the past few decades, was that rare instance where talent and moment meet to form a cultural tidal wave.

Gretchen’s ability to tailor songs as gorgeously rough-edged as she is, have given her the kind of “I am what I sing” originality few women in music history– Loretta, Janis, Dolly and Cher chief among them–have ever been able to achieve.

The Stylistics, Harold Melvin’s Blue Notes & The Delfonics

The Stylistics, Harold Melvin’s Blue Notes & The Delfonics

The Stylistics, Harold Melvin’s Blue Notes & The Delfonics

The Stylistics, Harold Melvin’s Blue Notes & The Delfonics

Friday, October 11, 2019 7:00pm

One of the most successful soul groups ever, The Stylistics had 12 straight Top Ten hits in the early ‘70s including: “You Are Everything”, “Betcha by Golly Wow”, “I’m Stone in Love with You”, “Break up to Make Up”, “Let’s Put it All Together”, and “You make me Feel Brand New.”   Among their peers, they were one of the smoothest and sweetest soul groups of their era.

That famous Philly Soul sound is still groovin’ today as The Stylistics  celebrate their 50th anniversary with original founding members Airrion Love and Herb Murell, with Jason Sharp and the newest Stylistic, “Bo” Henderson (former lead vocalist of The Temptations) whose amazing falsetto makes you feel as though you are listening to the hit songs exactly as you first heard them on vinyl.

Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes were a charismatic Philly band whose roots date back to long before their leap into stardom in the 1970’s. Behind lead singer Melvin, and the immensely popular Teddy Pendergrass, the group enjoyed tremendous success. Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes were formed by Melvin in Philadelphia in 1954, and not surprisingly, they would endure a long journey before reaching national stardom. The original lineup featured Harold Melvin, Donald Broody and Bernard Williams, signed with the small New York based Josie Records in 1954. In 1960, under the Valley Vue label, they went on to record their first hit to reach the R&B charts, “My Hero”.

In 1970, it was the addition of Teddy Pendergrass as their drummer that set off a series of pivotal events that led to the group’s jump to national prominence. In 1972, the group collaborated with producers/songwriters Leon Huff and Kenny Gamble and signed with their Philadelphia International label. Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes reeled off a series of hits that included “If You Don’t Know me By Now”, “The Love I Lost”, “Where Are All My Friends”, “Bad Luck” and “Wake Up Everybody”.

Sadly, the man most responsible for their success, Harold Melvin, died in 1997, but his spirit and legacy lived on through the group, which now consists of Arther “Sugar Bear” Aikens, Frank Lee, Darrell Bentley and Roger Banks. With the new singers, and to pay homage to Mr. Melvin, the group’s name was changed to Harold Melvin’s Blue Notes. The Blue Notes continue to tour and dazzle crowds with their array of groovy rhythms and soulful ballads, singing the songs their fans love to hear.

The Delfonics caught the rising tide of R&B and pop music at just the right time in the late 1960’s when young male groups were coming into their own. The Delfonics style of song and dance steps caught the world by storm as a top attraction in concerts, college campuses and The Apollo Theater in New York. The motivating force of the group is William (Poogie) Hart, who was inspired by the groups Frankie Lyman & The Teenagers, Little Anthony & The Imperials, The Temptations, and Gladys Knights & The Pips. Background singers that have performed with William Hart include Richie Daniels, Bruce Peterson, Major Harris, Wilbert Hart, Freddy Ingleton, Randy Cain and Dr. Salaam Love. His first song to be recorded was “Pretty Little Girl In The Yellow Dress.” The song that put The Delfonics name in the Philadelphia area was “He Doesn’t Really Love You”, which became an instant hit. The next song that was released ”You’ve Been Untrue” also an instant hit in Philadelphia, New York, New Jersey and Washington, D.C. written by William Hart.

“La La Means I Love You” became an instant hit peaking at #2 on Billboards top 100. The Delfonics released hit songs written by William Hart, arranged by Thom Bell and William Hart including “You Get Yours, I’ll Get Mine” “Break Your Promise” “I’m Sorry” and “The Delfonics Theme”,  all reached Billboard’s top ten. “Didn’t I Blow Your Mind This Time” was an overnight hit and #1 on the Billboard top 100 charts,  winning them a Grammy for Best R&B Song of 1970. The Delfonics also made the charts with their hit songs, “For The Love I Give To You”, “Ready Or Not Here I Come,” “I Try Over And Over Again”,  and “Somebody Loves You”. The group had 18 songs that reached the Billboard top 20 charts. The Delfonics hit songs have continuously been covered over the years by Aretha Franklin, Regina Bell, New Kids on the Block, Swingout Sisters, Manhattan Transfer, Silk, Bette Midler, Prince, The Jackson 5, Angela Bofill, The Fugees, Patti Labelle, Grover Washington Jr. and other well-known artists. They continue to perform throughout the United States and abroad, singing their hit songs that continue to capture the hearts of seasoned and new Delfonics fans alike. The Delfonics take great pride in their committed effort to be focused on their vocal style and smooth, professional performances. The Delfonics are true music legends of the 20th & 21st century.

Billy Ocean

Billy Ocean

Billy Ocean

Billy Ocean

Saturday, October 26, 2019 8:00pm

Billy Ocean is the biggest black recording star Britain has ever produced, one who has sold over 30 million records in his lifetime.

He has collected a pile of Gold and Platinum records across the world and hit the number one spot worldwide on pop charts including the USA, Australia, Germany, Holland, and the UK. Billy has achieved extraordinary success as both an artist and a songwriter

Born in Trinidad, Billy settled in London’s East End when just seven years old. The calypso crazy kid soon got turned on to soul singers like Otis Redding and Sam Cooke, as well as pop groups like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, leading him to spend much of his study time in the music room.

Billy got his first break when he signed to GTO records, for whom his second single was the Motown-ish Love Really Hurts Without You, which reached No. 2 in the UK charts and No. 12 in the US.

Two top twenty singles followed; Love on Delivery and Stop Me, then Red Light Spells Danger became a smash in both the UK and the US.

Billy changed record labels and his move to Jive Records provided instant success, with the million selling American number one single Caribbean Queen (for which Billy won a Grammy for best R&B Vocal), followed by Loverboy, and Suddenly, which became the first of Billy’s killer ballads. The Album from which these singles came from spent a year in the US Charts selling double platinum (triple in Canada). Billy also performed on the American half of Live Aid, making 1985 a truly incredible year for him.

1986 wasn’t bad either, opening with When the Going gets Tough (the tough gets going), the theme song to the Michael Douglas/Kathleen Turner/Danny Devito movie Jewel of the Nile. Billy then launched the Love Zone album, which went straight to No. 2 in the UK charts, staying in the top 40 for six months. In the US, there was a No. 1 single with There’ll be Sad Songs (To Make You Cry).

More Hits were to follow with the now classic Get Outta My Dreams; Get Into My Car, giving Billy yet another US No. 1 hit.

More hits followed as Billy also proved himself to be one of the most hardworking artists on the live stage, touring the world to ever-growing enthusiastic audiences.

After huge worldwide success and with a young family at home, Billy decided to take a break to spend some well earned time with them. In 2007, with the kids all grown up, Billy went back out to perform his hits again, this time with his daughter Cherie on backing vocals, with live dates in the UK and Europe, USA, Canada, and the Caribbean. The tour was a great success and culminated in his getting the bug once more for writing and recording. 2008 saw Billy back in the studio for the first time in 15 years, recording his brand new album ‘Because I Love You’ – which was released in 2009. 2010 saw Billy back on the road again with his band in the UK, Europe and the US and the release of ‘The Very Best of Billy Ocean’, which entered the UK album charts at number 17 and sold 72,000 copies in 4 weeks. Billy recently headed over to America where he played to fantastic crowds in Las Vegas, Detroit and Pennsylvania, Virginia and Florida.

In 2016 Billy announced double CD ‘Here You Are: The Best Of Billy Ocean’, featuring new tracks and along with a selection of his greatest hits, to be released 29th April 2016.

Boz Scaggs: Out of The Blues Tour 2019

Boz Scaggs: Out of The Blues Tour 2019

Friday, November 15, 2019 8:00pm

SHOW DATE CHANGE!!

As of Wednesday, June 26, BOZ SCAGGS has been advised by his doctors that he cannot tour at this time.  With some rest he is expected to make a full and swift recovery. The show at Twin River Casino Hotel previously scheduled for Wednesday, July 3, 2019 has been rescheduled to Friday, November 15, 2019. Twin River Patrons can either keep the tickets they currently have and use them on the new date or receive a refund at point of purchase.

Thank you for your concern and understanding…..and BOZ looks forward to seeing you then.

It’s appropriate that Boz Scaggs’ new album is Out of the Blues, since the blues is what first sparked his five-decade musical career. Scaggs joined the Steve Miller Band in San Francisco, performing on that group’s albums Children of the Future and Sailor, before launching his solo career with 1968’s seminal Boz Scaggs LP, recorded in Muscle Shoals, AL for Atlantic Records. Scaggs continued to mine a personalized mix of rock, blues and R&B influences, along with a signature style of ballads on such influential ’70s albums as Moments, Boz Scaggs & Band, My Time, Slow Dancer and 1976’s Silk Degrees. The latter release became a massive commercial breakthrough, reaching Number Two and remaining on the album charts for 115 weeks. It spawned three Top 40 hit singles: “It’s Over,” “Lido Shuffle” and the Grammy-winning “Lowdown.” Subsequently, “We’re All Alone” from that same album, would become a #1 single for Rita Coolidge. Silk Degrees was followed by the albums Down Two Then Left and Middle Man, and such hit singles as “Breakdown Dead Ahead,” “Jo Jo” and “Look What You’ve Done to Me.”

Tickets purchased for the original performance on July 3, 2019 will remain valid for the new performance date of November 15, 2019.
