LINCOLN, RHODE ISLAND, AUGUST 17, 2015: Twin River Management Group (TRMG) will host a series of three public workshops in September in an effort to gain more guidance from the residents of Tiverton on the design and planning effort for the proposed casino.
Known as “charrettes” the sessions will be facilitated by members of Twin River’s project team including its architect, traffic expert, planning consultants and environmental specialist. They will seek feedback from residents on a variety of issues ranging from the architectural look and feel of the property, traffic around the proposed location, environmental considerations and the range of preferred amenities such as a hotel, dining and entertainment options.
The schedule for the charrettes is as follows:
Thursday, September 10th from 7:00 -9:00 pm at the Tiverton High School, 100 North Brayton Avenue
Saturday, September 12th from 2:00 – 4:00 pm at the Country View Estates Clubhouse, 213 Hurst Lane (TENTATIVE LOCATION)
Tuesday, September 22nd from 6:30 – 8:00 pm at the Tiverton High School.
According to John E. Taylor, Jr., Chairman of Twin River Worldwide Holdings, owner of TRMG, the charrettes will allow the company to continue its commitment to engage the residents of Tiverton in the planning and design phases of the proposed casino. “We said all along that input from the residents of Tiverton was critical to this project,” said Mr. Taylor. “Efforts to do that have thus far included 26 neighborhood meetings where we estimate we have interacted with about 700 residents, which is approximately 10% of the likely voters. We’ve learned a great deal about how residents feel about a gaming facility in their town as well as what their preferred size, scope as well as look and feel of any facility we may consider. But we hope to learn more. By month’s end, that number of neighborhood meetings will be over 30 and it’s our hope that these three charrettes, held in larger venues, will be additional opportunities to engage the community in a highly interactive way, listen to their ideas and concerns, and use their feedback as building blocks for future design plans.”
He continued, “Following the charrettes, we intend to present in October our initial concepts to the Town and once again invite feedback on specific building design approaches.”
Twin River Management Group announced in April that it had secured the rights to acquire land in Tiverton a mere 400-feet from the Fall River, Massachusetts border where casinos are being proposed to compete with Rhode Island. The casino would be located on nearly 45-acres of property just off of William S. Canning Boulevard (Route 81) and is immediately adjacent to the Route 24 interchange. It would be accessed from Fall River, Massachusetts Exit 1 off of Route 24. The site is currently largely undeveloped.
Under the proposal, subject to Town and Statewide voter approval, the existing Newport Grand gaming license would be transferred to the proposed new casino. Initial concepts call for the new casino to offer approximately the same number of slot machines as Newport Grand – 1000 -1200 -but to be competitive with Massachusetts, also offer 30 .40 table games. There are currently 160 employees at the existing Newport Grand location and TRMG estimates a Tiverton workforce of approximately 350.
